THE AGRO-PASTORAL COLONY STAGE

In 1902, after resolving the matter of National limits with Chile, The National Government created the Agro-pastoral Colony Nahuel Huapi; distributed around the lake of the same name. It consisted in lots of 625 has., which could be acquired by public auction or paying a sum of AR$500.- of the time. That´s how the colonists from Buenos Aires and Chile, with a lot of effort; started settling in the area and dedicated themselves to agro-pastoral activity and forest exploitation. Stands out from that time a visionary called Primo Capraro.

Constructions were made with materials provided by the environment; mainly stone and wood. This area is abundant with cypresses, utilized in the most important buildings, and coihue for the minor ones.

Both the styles and techniques of the woodwork have a clear Chilean influence; and precisely, the majority of the artisans were from Chile, experts of this kind of work who dedicated themselves to the construction field. The more rustic technique utilized for the buildings was called “Palo a pique” and the other one, more complex, was called “Block House”. The buildings had one or two floors and were expanded when needed.
